Most of us stick to the same few breakfasts every week – idli, dosa, poha or paratha. They are good, but they start feeling repetitive after some time.

This post is about unique Indian breakfasts and uncommon breakfast dishes that people still eat every morning across different parts of India. These regional Indian breakfast recipes and traditional Indian breakfasts are not difficult. They are simply less spoken about online.

A few unique world breakfasts are also included. All of them are real food that still tastes good on ordinary mornings.

North India

Bedmi Puri with Aloo Sabzi

The puri is stuffed with spiced urad dal. It fries up crisp and full of flavour. The potato curry is simple but well-spiced. This remains one of the strongest traditional Indian breakfasts in many UP and Delhi homes.

Sattu Paratha

Roasted gram flour mixed with onion, green chilli and ajwain is stuffed inside the dough. The paratha turns dense, nutty and keeps you full for hours. A solid example of unique Indian breakfasts from Bihar and eastern UP.

Litti Chokha

Wheat balls filled with sattu are roasted until the outside gets a light char. Served with mashed roasted brinjal, tomato and potato. Smoky, rustic and filling – one of the better uncommon breakfast dishes from the region.

West India

Thalipeeth

Mixed flours with onion, coriander and spices are patted on the tawa. Crisp edges, soft centre. Usually eaten with thecha or curd. A classic among regional Indian breakfast recipes from Maharashtra.

Handvo

Fermented rice and lentil batter with grated bottle gourd is baked until the top turns golden. The inside stays moist. One piece makes a complete breakfast and counts as a proper, unique Indian breakfast.

Surti Locho

Soft, steamed and lightly tangy. Served with oil, chilli powder and sev. Light but popular in Surat and still one of the lesser-known uncommon breakfast dishes.

South India

Pesarattu with Upma

Green gram dosa filled with soft upma. Earthy taste and lighter than regular dosa. Ginger chutney goes well with it. A strong entry in regional Indian breakfast recipes from Andhra.

Puttu with Kadala Curry

Steamed rice cylinders layered with coconut are eaten with thick black chickpea curry. Soft and fragrant. One of the most comforting traditional Indian breakfasts from Kerala.

Neer Dosa

Paper-thin rice crepes that are almost transparent. Soft and delicate. Good with coconut chutney or light curry. A clean example of unique Indian breakfasts from coastal Karnataka.

East India

Jolpan

Flattened or puffed rice mixed with thick curd and jaggery. No cooking needed. Cool and light. Still common in Assam and a true uncommon breakfast dish.

Pitha

Soft rice cakes, often with coconut and jaggery. Some are steamed, some are fried. They carry the taste of festival mornings and remain important traditional Indian breakfasts.

Ghugni with Luchi

Dried yellow peas cooked into a lightly spiced curry, eaten with soft puffed luchi. Simple and filling. A solid regional Indian breakfast recipe from Bengal and Odisha.

Central India

Bhutte ka Kees

Fresh corn grated and tempered with mustard seeds, green chilli and a little milk. Sweet, savoury and local to Indore. One of the most distinctive and unique Indian breakfasts.

Indori Poha with Jalebi

Soft, slightly sweet poha topped with sev and onion. Hot jalebi on the side. A well-known Madhya Pradesh breakfast and still a favourite among uncommon breakfast dishes.

Dal Bafla

Soft wheat balls served with dal and ghee. Hearty and good for colder mornings. A proper traditional Indian breakfast from the region.

Unique World Breakfasts

These unique world breakfasts sit well next to the Indian ones.

Scotch Woodcock

Creamy scrambled eggs on toast with anchovy butter. Old British and almost forgotten.

Hagelslag

Thick chocolate sprinkles on buttered bread from the Netherlands. Simple and cultural.

Biscuits and Gravy

Fluffy biscuits covered in sausage gravy from the American South.

Hangtown Fry

Eggs scrambled with oysters and bacon. A real California Gold Rush dish.

Laverbread

Seaweed mixed with oatmeal, fried with bacon. Traditional from Wales.

Scottish Rowie

Dense, salty pastry that fishermen used to eat.

Peameal Bacon Sandwich & Cretons on Toast

Toronto classic and Quebec’s spiced pork spread on toast – both strong Canadian options.

Cheesy Vegemite Scrolls & Corn Fritters

Australian favourites that feel more interesting than plain toast.

Whitebait Fritters & South Island Cheese Rolls

Pure New Zealand – seasonal fritters and cheesy toasted rolls.

My favourite European High Protein Breakfast
